Welcome to the PJO Femslash Minibang 2018!

This is a basic info post detailing everything you need to know in order to sign up for the project! Read it to answer any questions you might have, or send us an ask on the blog if you’re still left a bit confused.

Sounds awesome! What’s a minibang? A bang is a fandom led project that pairs writers and artists together in order to generate more content for a certain topic (in this case, pjo femslash!). One person creates a fic about the topic, while the other(s) create art based on that fic. The mini in this case indicates the word count for the fic–how big it is. For this minibang writers will only be tasked with about 5-10k words, and will accordingly have less time to do it than if it were a bigger bang.

What’s this bang about? This is a bang about femslash! Specifically, in the context of the PJO universe (including HoO, TKC, MCGA and all that jazz). Participants will create works revolving around their favorite pjo girls, particularly their favorite f/f ships. Polyships are definitely allowed (and encouraged!), but remember that this bang is all about femslash, so there won’t be a focus on m/f relationships. In the end, the purpose of this minibang is to generate more content for wlw fans of pjo who want to see themselves represented! We had a lot of awesome fics and artwork last year, so I’m really excited to try going into it again!

How to sign up:

Artists can sign up here. Artists will be tasked with creating a full piece work based of off their partner’s fic in the time allotted (they’ll get to choose who to work with). In order to see what constitutes as art, check out the full rules and guidelines for artists here. (For those who are on the app or otherwise can’t access that page, click here).

Writers can sign up here. Writers will be tasked with creating a minimum of 5k words for a fic centered on a certain femslash ship or character of their choosing, as well as first creating a summary of their prospective fic by May 3rd so that artists will know how to choose. In order to see the full rules and guidelines for being a writer, check out this page. (For those who are on mobile or otherwise can’t access that page, click here).

Anybody is allowed to sign up as both a writer and an artist, but we very

much  do not recommend it.

As of right now, all applications are due by May 1st, 2018.

That just about covers it! A schedule of events for the project is posted on the blog, which you can check for reminders on deadlines, as well as any possible updates. Thank you so much for taking the time to read about this project, and i hope that you decide to join!

please reblog and share to spread the word!

so you’ve seen gifs of simone giertz’s shitty robots, right? of course you have.

she’s amazing. she’s hilarious. she’s a woman in STEM, kicking ass.

she just found out she has a brain tumor.

the doctors are pretty sure it’s benign, but it’s big, and she’s gonna have to have pretty major surgery which is gonna keep her from making videos for a while.

while she’s recovering, her patreon is pretty much gonna be her only source of income, so if you enjoy the gifs of her videos, or just want to support a pretty awesome chick who needs some help, you might want to kick a few dollars over that way.

(i’m not associated with simone in any way, i don’t know her – other than the fact that she favorited one of my tweets once! – but i absolutely adore her personality and her work and i haven’t seen any posts about this, so i figured i’d put something up.)

How Our Policy & Abuse and Support Volunteers Get in Touch with You

transformativeworks:

We recently received reports about one or more Tumblr accounts posing as “AO3 consultants” and contacting other users about their works on the Archive. In those messages, users are asked to take down their works “due to reports of abuse” or else have their works deleted by AO3 admins.

Hey, folks! Just a heads up that AO3 Support and AO3 Policy & Abuse will never contact you via social media. The only way they’ll contact you is via the e-mail address associated with your AO3 account, so please keep it up to date.

A list of all official OTW social media accounts can be found here on our website. Those accounts are sometimes used to contact people for various reasons (such as replying to tweets or answering Tumblr asks), but never for anything related to a ticket with Support or Policy & Abuse.

All information submitted to Support and Policy & Abuse is confidential and restricted to only those who need to know. This means that cases being handled by those committees will never be discussed on social media.

If you’ve received a message via social media claiming to be from or about AO3 Support or AO3 Policy & Abuse, please disregard it.  Your works on AO3 will not be affected.

.. sorry to burst anyone’s bubble  but I’m not sure that his cure is an actual cure, as in gets rid of the HIV virus permanently,  or just stops the virus from replicating.

taken from NIH

The thing that makes HIV really hard to cure is it inserts own DNA into the host cell’s DNA.  Then it will use that DNA and replicate itself like in the figure above.   Sometimes HIV will enter a latent phase where the HIV DNA just hangs out in the cell til something activates it again.  All antiviral /antiretroviral drugs  (ART) currently in circulation targets actively replicating viruses.  In order for someone to be cured of HIV, all presence of the virus, including its DNA, has to be destroyed or else the latent HIV could come back once the patient stops taking ART.

Now onto his specific claim in his most recent published paper.

source

His claim:  Antivirt (his drug) is a charged small molecule therefore able to get into “sanctuary” cells where HIV is hidden and kills the hidden HIV.

So the problem with dealing with hidden HIV infection is real, and what he says about small molecules being able to get into cells easily does makes sense in a general sense.  I am just unsure that a nanoparticle could go and specifically target hidden HIV because it has no mechanism to splice HIV DNA out of cells. The only other method that would somewhat support the author’s claim is, the nanoparticles specifically killing HIV infected cells via some mechanism that targets infected cells.

Next, there are multiple issues with the data he presents.  First , small sample size, if he wants to convince people he needs to have a larger clinical study than 10 people.  Second, he should have long term studies passed 8 weeks, because so far his claims are base on extrapolation from this small set of data. Next issue, in Table 1  Viral load range start from 951-2689  then  end at  1894-3816.  His stats analysis reveal that the difference from start to finish are significant  ( p value < 0.05)   but  those viral load values are still considered high. The same comments can be made for Table 2 with the CD4 cell counts.  Patients start 302- 691  per ml   and ends 374-641  per ml, while normal cell counts are over 500 per ml.  So there is no definitive proof that Antivirt could at least get rid of an active HIV infection.  And he overreaches in his conclusion that Antivirt could fully cure HIV since he has not shown that he has gotten rid of “sanctuary” cells.

thanks to @captainfanoftheceiling  who took time out of her busy schedule to discuss this with me over fb.  I used her comments on the data in the paragraph above.

sorry for the long post guys, but I wanted to explain how HIV works and how finding a cure for it is very hard.

Curious Blue Shark

(source)

this shark is the most earnest creature on the entire planet

WHAT THIS

WHAT IT DO

BOOP

@why-animals-do-the-thing ???

This is probably investigatory behavior! As we talked about a couple years ago on the blog, sharks have lots of little sensory organs around their nose and mouth called Ampullae of Lorenzini.

They’re basically little gel-filled pores that sense electric current, and they’re why sharks investigate everything with their faces. Sharks bump things with their nose to put their ampullae near them in an attempt to learn about them – like finding out if you’re animal, vegetable or mineral, and if you could potentially be edible.

From the video linked, we can see the shark is swimming around checking out the divers (who appear to be hanging out at a decompression stop), before coming over closer to the guy who is filming. This isn’t aggressive behavior – it looks like simply curiosity. It’s not a shark kiss, it’s a shark question: what are you?
